It was in 1959 that the revolutionary idea to rapidly stretch heated rods of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) resulted in a strong, microporous material with superior characteristics including low water absorption and excellent weathering properties … and ultimately led to the GORE-TEX® brand.

Co-invented by Wilbert L. Gore and Gore's son, Robert, the two applied for their first of many patents for GORE-TEX® in 1970, followed by their first commercial order for the new fabric in 1976.
