Expect some interesting changes in the event format as contest organizers think out of the box to maximize competition days before the waiting period comes to a close. Both Vans parks in Orlando, FL and Orange, CA went big with their best trick contests last week. In Orlando it was the mighty outdoor 10-stair, and at The Block it was the infamous Combi-Bowl. The worlds top surfers are gathering on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, today in preparation for the $900,000 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink, that begins this Friday, November 12. The first stop will be the men's Reef Hawaiian Pro and the Cholo's Women's Pro at Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park. The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing consists of three men's and three women's professional surfing events that are the final stop on the 2010 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour. In its 28th year, the Vans Triple Crown is considered the most prestigious title in surfing next to the ASP World Title.

Maui's Billy Kemper, 20, posted the largest win of his fledgling pro surfing career when he won the Vans Presents The HIC Pro at Sunset Beach today. The victory also netted him the 2010 ASP Hawaii regional pro title and a start in next week's Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Kemper surfed a total of four times today and survived a close final tussle in inconsistent 10- to 12-foot surf to claim the $12,000 winner's check.

This past week on October 25th, a 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of the Mentawai Islands near Indonesia. Following the earthquake was a devastating 10 foot tsunami that washed out villages and a resort. The death toll is now more than 400, with 300 missing, many people seriously injured and at least 23,000 people affected. Wave face heights of 30 feet at Sunset Beach have created too much of a good thing for the opening day of the HIC Pro presented by Vans. While Sunset Beach is "maxing out" today, the remainder of the week promises plenty of big wave action. The forecast calls for wave face heights ranging from 15 to 25 feet for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The HIC Pro is a three-day event, so it is possible that the event could run back-to-back tomorrow through Friday. Please stay tuned.
